Remote Play

Since Apeiron 1.12

Apeiron can stream a game that runs on one PC to another PC with Apeiron. There are two ways:

  • Remote Play: your own game, from your gaming PC to your other PC (a laptop, a PC in another room). Both are signed in to your account. The game runs on the gaming PC, and you play it from the other one.
  • Remote Play Together: a friend plays the game that is running on your PC, without their own copy. You invite them from your friends list, they get a notification, and a stream window opens on their side.

Windows only, PC to PC. Phones, TVs and Linux are not supported.

1. Remote Play to your other PC

  1. On the PC where the game is installed, keep Apeiron running and signed in. Settings → Remote Play → Stream games from this PC is on by default.
  2. On your other PC, open the game's page in the store. Next to Play there is a Play via <PC name> button.
  3. The gaming PC starts the game on its own, and the stream window opens on the PC you are using.

The button appears only when the gaming PC is online, has the game installed and allows streaming.

2. Remote Play Together with a friend

  1. Start the game.
  2. Open the friends list (or the overlay, Shift+Tab), point at an online friend and press Remote Play Together.
  3. The friend gets an invitation with Join and Decline. If they join, they see your game in a stream window and control it with you.

One guest at a time. Only mutual friends can be invited. The invitation expires after two minutes.

Games without local co-op. Remote Play Together sends the guest's input to your PC as if a second person sat at your keyboard. In a game made for one player (Rebellion, for example), you and your friend control the same character. For real co-op in Rebellion, use its own online party.

3. What the guest can do on your PC

  • The guest's keyboard, mouse and gamepad act only on the game window and only while it is in front. If you switch to another window, their input pauses and they see a note about it.
  • In Remote Play Together, Windows keys and shortcuts that leave or close the game — Win, Alt+Tab, Alt+F4, Ctrl+Esc — are not passed to your PC.
  • In the overlay you can switch off the guest's keyboard, mouse or gamepad at any time, and Stop ends the stream.
  • Gamepad. A guest's controller reaches your game as a virtual Xbox controller. That needs the ViGEmBus driver: Settings → Remote Play → Install driver (Windows asks for administrator rights). Without the driver the guest plays with keyboard and mouse.

4. What is streamed

  • Only the game window. Apeiron captures the game's own window (Windows Graphics Capture), not the screen: other windows, notifications and your desktop never reach the guest. The mouse cursor is not in the picture — the guest sees their own.
  • Only the game's sound. Apeiron records the audio of the game's process. Your microphone, voice chat and other apps are not streamed. On Windows versions without per-app audio capture, the whole system sound is sent instead.
  • Picture and sound are encoded by your graphics card in a low-latency mode, up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. The guest chooses quality in the stream window: Auto picks it by connection (local network, direct, or relay).

5. How the connection works

  • The two PCs connect directly (WebRTC, encrypted with DTLS-SRTP). Our server only introduces them: it passes the connection offers and network addresses between your PC and the guest's, and does not see the picture, sound or input.
  • When a direct connection is impossible (some mobile and provider networks), the stream goes through a relay (TURN servers of Cloudflare). The relay forwards encrypted packets and cannot decrypt them. Over a relay the quality is lowered to 720p.
  • What our server keeps: while a session lasts — who invited whom, which game, and the name of your PC. Nothing about a session is stored after it ends.

6. Privacy and safety

  • Invite only people you trust: the guest sees everything the game shows and can do what the game allows.
  • Anti-cheat. Some online games forbid streaming or remote input. We cannot promise how a third-party anti-cheat will judge it — use Remote Play only where the game allows it.
  • The stream of someone else's game is for the two of you. Recording and publishing it follows the game's own rules.
