Open Catalogue
Besides the music artists publish on Resonance themselves, the catalogue includes tracks by independent artists from the open music network Audius (audius.co). This page explains how they get here, how they differ from the rest of the catalogue, and which Audius documents apply to them. It applies in addition to the Resonance Terms of Service; the service is operated by APERTURESyndicate OÜ ("APERTURESyndicate", "we", "us", "our").
These terms are published in good faith and are pending review by qualified EU/Estonian legal counsel; nothing here is a substitute for formal legal advice.
1. What these tracks are
Audius is an open network where artists upload their own music. We connect to it through the public Audius API under its Open Music License — a free licence Audius grants to player applications, including for commercial use, on condition of attribution.
The rights in these recordings stay with their creators. An open-catalogue artist did not publish on Resonance themselves and has not accepted our Creator & Distribution Terms: their music is available here under the Audius licence, not under an agreement with us.
2. How we select them
Not the whole network makes it in. Each artist is added manually by a moderator; candidates are artists verified on Audius and those whose releases reached the network through a distributor. We take only tracks that are open to everyone on Audius itself: hidden tracks, tracks available only on a condition, tracks restricted to particular applications, and releases not yet out are not included. Within an approved artist, tracks with clear signs of being a cover, a rework of someone else's song, or AI-generated are filtered out automatically, and a sudden burst of new uploads sends the artist back for review.
This is selection, not a rights check: neither the moderator nor the filters confirm that the uploader holds the rights to a recording. If rights are infringed, see Section 5.
3. How they differ from the rest of the catalogue
- The audio is not stored with us. We keep only the track's metadata; on every play the audio comes directly from Audius network nodes. The node serving it therefore sees your device's IP address, as with any request to a website; how Audius handles that data is described in the Audius Privacy Policy. The cover art of such tracks and their artists' images are loaded from Audius servers too. We do not pass your account, nickname, or listening history to Audius (see Section 11 of the Privacy Addendum).
- Attribution on every track. Each such track carries an attribution line with a link to the original on Audius.
- No offline downloads. The offline downloads described in the Premium & Subscription Terms do not extend to open-catalogue tracks — they can only be streamed.
- A track can disappear. If the artist deletes or hides a track on Audius, it disappears from Resonance too — at the next sync with the network, or immediately once the network refuses to serve its audio. We may also remove an individual track, an artist, or the whole open catalogue. As with any catalogue track, we do not guarantee its availability (Section 11 of the Resonance Terms of Service).
4. Payouts
No royalties accrue for plays of open-catalogue tracks: the Audius licence is free, and such an artist counts as an artist without income from their first day in the catalogue (except artists who have moved to Resonance — Section 6). Their plays split a listener's subscription on equal terms with everyone else's, but the share that falls to them is not redistributed to other artists — it stays with APERTURESyndicate. 5. Rightsholder complaints
Complaints about open-catalogue tracks are accepted the same way as for any other content — under our Copyright & Takedown Policy, via https://report.aperturesyndicate.com or [email protected]. On a valid notice we remove the track from Resonance, and it does not come back on later syncs.
Our removal does not affect the track on the Audius network itself. To have it removed there, the rightsholder can contact Audius directly — and if the track is removed on Audius, it disappears from Resonance too.
6. If you are an artist on Audius
You can move to Resonance directly — write to support ([email protected]) or apply in Creators. For the move you sign in to Creators with your APERTURESyndicate account, the artist profile is linked to it, and from that point your music on Resonance is governed by the Creator & Distribution Terms: the rights in your recordings are granted to us by you, not by the Audius licence. We move nothing without your consent.
During the move, audio is copied to us for the tracks whose original files you allowed to be downloaded on Audius; you can upload the rest in Creators yourself. Until a track is moved it keeps playing from the Audius network, but it is your music and you granted the rights yourself, so you earn from it under the general rules — the same as from moved tracks. Likes, playlists, and listening history are kept. Royalties under the general rules of the Royalty & Payout Policy start accruing from the next settlement month after the move.
